Monique van Someren is an oil painter and sketchbook artist residing in Elizabethtown-Kitley, Canada, where she shares her home with her spouse and two rescue dogs. Nestled by the stunning St. Lawrence River, the scenic views serve as a constant source of inspiration for her art. A graduate of the Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts, Monique has dedicated several decades to her passion for painting, drawing, and photography, resulting in a rich collection of works that bring her immense joy and fulfillment.

Her art celebrates the beauty of nature and highlights the charm of everyday objects often overlooked. Using watercolour, gouache, coloured pencils, alcohol markers, and airbrush techniques, Monique creates intricate drawings on paper. Her paintings primarily feature oils on canvas or wood, allowing her vibrant depictions of wildlife to shine.

Among her most notable creations is the “Backyard Buddies Series,” launched in 2022, showcasing the endearing creatures inhabiting her garden. In 2025, she expanded her artistic repertoire with the “Garden Party” series, capturing the playful antics of local wildlife throughout the seasons. Each piece reflects their lively personalities and human-like behaviours, enhanced by thoughtfully incorporated props that tell engaging stories.

Monique’s joy comes from watching furry and feathered friends frolic on her deck and lawn. Armed with her camera, she captures the playful spirit of these delightful creatures, drawing endless inspiration for her artwork. Each day begins with the arrival of these animals, whose joyful sounds fill her garden, igniting her creativity. Through her animal-themed art, Monique aims to bring smiles to her viewers, especially during challenging times, fostering hope and resilience in everyone who encounters her work.
